What we noticed when considering moving to FL from CA 12 years ago was that insurance rates — if you even could get insurance — were through the roof. That does factor in to the cost of living that you mention.
Also, we were focused on the Sarasota-Bradenton area, and the traffic was SO bad that we nixed relocating there. Why would we go from CA’s 101 and 405 to sit in traffic in FL? We would not.
Sister and BIL lived there from the mid-’80s, and moved here to TN about five years ago. They had to visit a couple months ago and said “Never again!” because of the traffic.
We had friends who retired in WY, and they loved it! They moved from rural western NYS, which is much like here in eastern TN.
Had to leave recently due to family issues, but they were sorry to go.
