I understand the context of your statement, but I would have to disagree with you.
Graduation is certainly a rite of passage and worth celebrating. Sure, it isn’t going to help you build a better bridge or perform gallbladder surgery, but we live in a culture that is increasingly attempting to minimize the value of the individual and enhance the value of the collective, which I think it destructive to both the individual and the culture.
While it is true that celebration is not intrinsically a good thing, it does have value where it IS a good thing. Like it used to be when celebrating advancement to Eagle Scout, or getting a commission in the military, or...graduating from High School.
Granted, they have watered down High School and College so much that the value of graduation is comparatively diminished, but it is still a watershed event in life.
Just imagine being a graduating senior in a feckless blue state school. Your high school graduation was canceled in 2020, and now your college graduation will be canceled in 2024. Meanwhile, in States like Florida and Texas, you’ve got to graduate.
Cowards!
Maine Mariner wrote: “It is a big deal for parents and grandparents, especially if the graduate is the first member of a family to attend and graduate from college!”
I refused to go to my graduation. I explained to my parents that graduation at OU was not what she imagined. It was held in the football stadium in late-May, very hot. No shade. Cost $25 to rent the graduation gown. Only those recieving a doctorate ‘walked’, ie, crossed the podium to recive their diploma.
F Columbia!
Anyone who sends their kid there is INSANE!
Furthermore, I do NOT want 1c of my money going to these acedemic sh!t holes!
Hopefully Republitards do more than send a strongly worded letter, cause we know demoRats want this!
Wait a minute. Columbia isn’t canceling graduation. They are doing it by school so smaller ceremonies. Harvard did much the same back in the day at the Harvard undergrad graduation ceremonies I attended. It was much more personal.
The hamas butchers protestors won!
In fact harvard graduates received their diplomas at “house” ceremonies.
Imagine letting a bunch of 19 and 20 year old gender study major telling you where to invest your money and how to run your school. What a bunch of spineless cowards.
So...the protesters are now in charge at Columbia.
Shameful
It -sounds- like the Uni wide ceremony is cancelled, but that department ceremonies will still be held?
“Shut down Columbia University it’s finished”
if not now, soon enough if Columbia keeps allowing “protesters” to dictate what they can and cannot do ... naturally, i rooting for the “protesters” ...
Agreed. Anyone with a Columbia U diploma should be put on a do not hire list.
That is half the problem with education in our country: Families who think education is about the pomp and circumstance, instead of what their darlings learn;
Our schools and colleges would get away with a lot less than they do if those parents would smarten up!
If families were less focused on the degrees, graduations, and prestige of the colleges, there would be more actual education going on in higher ed.
Why not just move it off campus? Have all the pomp n' circumstance in a safe, clean space. It might actually turn out better.
14,000 student graduate from Columbia each year. For the actions of several hundred everyone else are denied. Same group who lose out on high school graduation because of Covid.
