I agree. When I retired from the Marine Corps, I had a top secret clearance (TS). I got a job in the Federal service and my boss told me to not let my TS lapse, because I was the only person in that department that had one and every now and again they needed someone to read the TS message board. Several years later, I moved to another part of the government and they wanted me to have a Secret clearance, so hiring me was really easy. What caught me off guard was that I never had to get a piss test after I left the Marine Corps, even though I had a TS and later a secret clearance. I asked my boss how would I be notified for a piss test (email, phone call, etc...). My boss laughed and told me that in her experience they never piss tested civilians. Her thoughts were that they were scared that too many people would pop positive.

I had a secret clearance for a while. Never really knew the reason (civilian). I guess it was just in case, but I didn’t know jack about anything important. Worked in Engineering and Housing (later aka Facilities Engineering).
I know they called several people I put down as references and one of them told me they didn’t even initially inform them that they were calling about me.
And no, no urine test. Not that I ever had to worry about that unless there was a problem with a Diet Mt Dew dependency.

Present times make for interesting bed-fellows. When the choice is between the guy who partakes in questionable substances in relative private versus the side that openly engages in human trafficking and defends pedophilia, I think the choice is pretty clear.
