You’re correct. This is not the norm in a traditional Jewish prayer service. The prayer for the nation and its leaders was added to the full Jewish liturgy in the 14th century.
Either the family requested that Hunter Biden be given this honor, or perhaps the rabbi or officers did to prove how “woke” they are. That the rabbi and the board and the members of this congregation, not to mention Hunter’s wife’s family, wouldn’t be embarrassed to have this person read those words at this time is cringeworthy. No matter how “woke” this clergyman and congregation are being pushed to be, it’s doubtful anyone there, except for Hunter himself, didn’t internally squirm as this public embarrassment was happening. Maybe somebody a bit dense thought that having him read those nice words in a place of worship would erase or cover over the thousands of other images of him the world has seen on his laptop and elsewhere.
