If one subscribes to the possibility that aliens have been on our planet for hundreds - if not thousands - of years, and have likely achieved leadership positions in powerful countries, masquerading as humans...

I think the craft...as they enter the atmosphere...tend to use cloud cover, and in doing so, will hit ‘pockets’ of lightning.

I don’t think they anticipate that or have the ability to recover from the lightning episodes.

One other thing I would suggest, is that we aren’t talking or looking at one, or two or three species. It could literally be hundreds to come in...check out things...then leave.
