In the old days it was taken for granted that kings would have mistresses. Royal marriages were arranged for reasons of state and to produce legitimate sons. Princess Diana was descended from one of Charles II’s illegitimate children.
And it was a lot worse than that. I mean, he didn’t just condemn them to endless visits to a divorced women support group.
I do appreciate Trump’s sentimentality. He does things on his own terms and he’s not a bad guy. He would have loved to go to the Coronation because he loves the monarchy. It’s just that, as President, he can’t go.
There are some people who are using his desire to go to the Coronation to bash him, sure. To me, I’m just correcting him. It is the protocol of the United States to meet with leaders that were duly elected by the people. Any formal meeting with monarchs is done through representatives, unless that monarch is the only option to that country.
