People need to stop calling this mental illness. 1.5 million Americans do not suddenly become mentally ill and become transgenders when in years past it was never that many. Here’s a serious question.
Granted, in the early Church martyrdoms were relatively common at the hands of the Romans (by lion or other means) but at the same time I don’t recall Christians rushing into the arenas either.
Somewhere between “in hoc signo” (Constantine, 312 AD) and now, between the doctrine of just war and definitely by the middle ages, the idea that a Christian might actually defend himself (and his family, city, nation and culture) emerged and even proactively stop an emerging threat.
Thus was muhammadism kept from overrunning Christendom. Thus were the Marines birthed, stopping muhammedan slavers and pirates. And so forth.
Somewhere in the modern era people have become convinced that meekness involves allowing the wholesale slaughter of all goodness. Die so that others may live; sure. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” — yes. Sheepishly allow friends, family, all to be butchered and oneself last?
Certainly be lawful; but mercy requires we inhibit crazies from committing mortal sins like murder, forcefully if needed.
