[Study finds heavy metals in 28 popular dark chocolate bars]
It’s a one-way ticket to midnight!
“ The expert committee also found cadmium exposure in cacao occurs naturally before harvest, while lead levels are influenced by where and how the cocoa beans are handled by humans after harvest.”
So, cadmium from the soil and lead from the water and clay used to process the seeds after harvesting the pods.
Yes, blame the US chocolate makers.
Lead is .5 micrograms.
Cadmium is 4.1 micrograms.
An assortment of Chocolate bars were listed with their percentages of MADL product. For instance, Lily's Extremely Dark Chocolate 85% Cocoa:
Lead: 143%
Cadmium: 101%
“... naturally occurring organic arsenic, which is bound with other elements and is generally non-toxic....”
I think that is the key. In a previous article about this the article or a poster said that one of the metals is found on the outer part of the nut which is sometimes removed for certain types of chocolates, while the other metal is found in the center and is more difficult to remove. Removal is done for taste - nothing to do with removing the “toxin”.
I’ll eat my chocolate in Montana where the limit is 5 micrograms per liter of lead.
... is that 5 micrograms of chocolate per litre of lead? You’ve gott me confused.
Think about this -
Is it safe to eat any processed food in this day and age? Who knows what is in it? Serious.
eat enough and you are your own battery, hail climate change!
It was sarcasm.
Where's the research showing all popular bars are highly likely to have no unsafe levels of heavy metals?
Man-—that was my first thought while reading the article...

i confess...
i’m a chocoholic...
“Is it safe to eat any processed food in this day and age?”
My wife follows some doctor on the internet that says the guide to healthy living is cut out sugars and carbs and try to eat unprocessed stuff. Eat like they did before 1900 or something. She has been cutting down/out sugars and carbs for a few years now.
Makes sense.
And the limit of lead in MT is per liter - water or chocolate I suppose! In the little blurb when they talk about 0.5 microgram limit in California it didn’t say what units (per day?) Trying to figure it out is confusing with all of the various ways they put the limits (per gram, ppb, etc.)
Same. I put the title into DuckDuckGo and found it on several sources that didn’t try to get my e-mail address so that they can load up my mailbox with their spam.

I know, I was trying to be funny.
