THis is my governor and I think he is an idjit..but all that aside—sobreity is an interesting philosophical question.
Life in itself is cruel and for some quite hard. Occasional escapes from the day to day struggle might be considered a worthwhile salve. I am not saying addiction, nor anythign like that...more of a Soma type thing, that can help one get through a day. Of course religion can do that of course and for many that is their salve...but there are times when a human might just want to let their mind go on vacay...
I was always surprised that the early Americans eschewed water and drank Applejack...mainly because the water could not be trusted. If that is true, then this country was founded by a drunken peoples wasted off their a$$...
But I digress...
It is difficult to have rational conversation on this subject because of some of the inherent baggage—addiction, perpetual drunkeness, etc...I think humans have been looking for some sort of non-habit, no ill effect prozac type of substance to help them get through the day. The South Americans chewed the cocoa leaf...Asians the betel nut—in the Near East I think its Khaqt?
An interesting subject anyway.

To add to my comment above, if there were a substance that gave one a 15 minute “trip” and left you zoned, elated, refreshed and had no long or short term physicial or mental effects—would you take it?
The obvious common sense rules of no substance taking while operating equipment, etc...applies just like it does today...
