Even if the oceans lakes and rivers were perfectly clean I wouldn't eat seafood. I just don't like the way it tastes. But the prospect of ingesting mercury and other nasty stuff makes me even more glad that I don't eat it.

Terrible name. They do last “forever” in the sense that they don’t magically disappear. But they typically get caught in sediment; or washed out to sea and THEN caught in sediment. The implication that our rivers and lakes are endlessly accumulating more and more simply is a deliberately false one.
