The mission of the B-52 hasn't changed.

However, the ordnance it carries most certainly has. Bottom line, Air Launched Cruise Missiles (ALCMs) are the ordnance of choice for the B-52.

With air-refueling, the B-52 has global reach. With ALCMs, the B-52s can launch them well outside threat range.

Once Air-Dominance is declared, the B-52s can carry over 108 GP bombs.

Thank you both for these insights! The B52 is almost as old as I am. They have lasted a lot longer than the B47s, which quickly superseded the B29. As a young child, I was enamored of the B17s and B29s that put a lot of muscle into our dominance over our enemies. I followed their progress in the newspapers and magazines, of which there were plenty before the TV arrived to take over their market.

But I don't remember much about the B36, that apparently coexisted with the B47.
