“Tshibaka leads the race with 44.3 percent. Murkowski is close behind at 42.8 percent, while Democrat candidate Pat Chesbro holds 9.5 percent.”
There are more than 9% Dems in Alaska. Obviously lots of Dems voted for Murkowski first.
However, nothing compels you to make a second choice. It’s quite possible a Dem will not vote for a Rep under any circumstances in this environment.
Kelley had to get over 50% in order to win. There are too many Murkey voters who would never vote Kelley and will put the Democrat as their 2nd choice.
Sadly, Murky will win. And that’s by design.
That’s a myth. Latinos continue to vote democrat. At least here in Texas.
My understanding from reading the rules was that they eliminate the candidate with the least votes and assign all of those votes by their #2 choice. With more than 2 people running there it wouldn’t be Murkowski voters who have their votes reassigned.
Could be wrong here, but that is my analysis of this.
That said I don’t believe Kelley will win.
The lowest vote getting candidate is dropped. The voters that chose that candidate (that was dropped), have their #2 choice added to the remaining candidates and add that to the remaining candidates totals.
There is zero chance that people who voted for the democrat, put Kelly as their #2, high chance they put Murky as their #2. Kelly will get little to no additional votes.
And here I thought Alaska was heavily Republican. I thought Sarah Palin was a good indication that most Alaskans were salt off the earth people like her. Why would they vote for RCV? Also I haven’t heard anything about her race. What happened?
Very Republican and overall right of center, but not very conservative. Palin’s popularity is about the same as Biden’s in the state - low to mid 30s. Begich would have won the initial special election had she not jumped in. He was the race long before she even talked about getting in and he was going to challenge Don Young as an incumbent. That didn’t stop some people on here claiming he got in after Palin to try to sabotage her. There are a lot of people for whom reality has no bearing on what they say or think - used to be a trait primarily on the Left, but all too many on the right are starting to adopt this same ethic. Feelings over facts.
It is why they are now talking about coalition government in Alaska vs. party forming government. And they have nothing to fear - there is no party primary in Alaska anymore, therefore, they cannot be primaried out of office.
Is that the same Begich who is related to the guy the crashed in Alaska and they never found the plane?
