Well, what the russian officer says is true. We need to start realizing all modern war is designed to murder a certain group of people ans enrich another group of people no matter what society it is. And then the group that gets enriched uses patriotism or duty as reaaon the group to be murdered should willingly go to their murder.
I think your after Vietnam analogy is missing an important difference. I know that after his enlistment which included Gulf War 1 (1991) was finished, my son continued in the paid Reserves. This included a monthly meeting, and 2 weeks training each year. After several years his Reserve commander urged him to reinlist because he wanted my son for a specific job, which he did. He is now retiring after more than 20 years.

Back in my day (I served 1970-1974, USAF), when you separated from active duty after your tour of duty, you went into the Inactive Reserve for two years. But there was, contemporary to that, the regular reserve, as well as the National Guard. The regular Reserve and the National Guard would be called to active duty before the Inactive Reserve. At least, that’s how I remember it. But, that was some 50 years ago.

I guess my son was the Regular Reserve as he met monthly, trained yearly, and got some pay.
