I have a suspicion that it will be proven in a few days that it was indeed Russia, as Russian submarines were apparently being tracked in the area.
Russia is in a state of collapse. What few financial numbers they do not censor are propped up BS. Russkie "mobilization" of one million people, which they are failing, won't turn the conflict around. Ukraine already has 1.1 million people in the field, and unlike the incoming Russians, they actually have training and the most modern equipment. Ukraine, today, is on the verge of collapsing Russia's most recently setup front, and Russian conscripts are already showing up in the field and surrendering right away because they've been given incoherent orders, can't run their own equipment, or have shitty equipment.

It was looking like cooler heads in the EU might prevail and cut a deal that could get gas flowing to Europe to avert a looming crisis as winter sets in.
Not gonna happen now. The pipelines will almost certainly be down until spring, if ever.
The Biden Admin seems to have maneuvered Russia into the Ukraine adventure and seems to be doing everything possible to prolong the conflict so it is no big stretch assume they did the next logical move to take down Russia and sabotaged the pipelines.

Big problem with your conspiracy theory is that Europe is already topped up with gas and ready for the winter, plus the new Norwegian pipeline. I have not even seen any movement in the market because of the alleged sabotage.

Absolutely and done properly the devices would have incorporated high explosives from a country such as Iran or widely available HE made in Eastern Europe and marketed world wide. Some HE is actually marked with specific microscopic identifiers that can be recovered from explosive residue. I’m not 100% sure such microscopic residue can also be picked up from an undersea detonation but it likely can.
Would the perpetrators make such mistakes? Only if they are STUPID. But since this was a STUPID and not well thought out plan, they could certainly neglected common precautions.

We don’t know anything at all, this could be a clumsy act, or it could be that we never uncover who did it, or at least for a long while, we just don’t know at this moment.
