To secure a sphere of influence seems a remarkably flimsy justification for such extreme action. Influence over what and whom? To what end? And why by these means?

For there's no shortage of examples of spheres of influence being established without warfare. Over the last century the United States extended a sphere of influence over the greater part of the world by means that were primarily economic and cultural, only occasionally military. Much the same could be said of Britain in the 19th century. Today, China, entirely by economic means, has most of sub-Saharan Africa in its sphere of influence, again (subject to correction) without a single Chinese soldier on African soil.

It seems to me that your ideal 'Old World Order' would be a small number of large, powerful nations having little to do with each other but each surrounded by a protective ring of weak vassal states over which they have total effective control.

That's not about 'influence', that's about power. Why not call a spade a spade rather than bury it with a euphemism? Could it be because it makes it easy to dismiss the ethics of the situation?
