It’s not about winning.....nobody is that stupid. It’s the money......
If Cheney runs as a minor-party candidate or independent, she’ll provide a home for the “Never Trump” Republicans — the people who don’t like Trump but who can’t bring themselves to vote for a Democrat.
In 2016, Evan McMullin appealed to the same demographic. He was a complete unknown and was on the ballot in only eleven states, but he still got 0.53% of the vote. Cheney would have more time to get ballot access. With that and her name recognition, she’d do much better than McMullin did, at least if Trump is the GOP nominee again.
She’d have no chance of winning. The question is which major-party nominee she’d hurt more, and I really don’t know.
Of course, if she runs for the Republican nomination, she’ll get stomped, whether or not Trump is in the race.
She would not last longer than Jeb Bush in the primary race.
