I did not read the NY times article, but was Hunter interviewed for it? Are his comments in it?

That may have been why Joe said “I think you’re clear.”

Of course most folks would have said “I think you’re in the clear” if they wanted to say that Hunter won’t get caught, but of course ol’ Joe isn’t “most folks” when it comes to intelligible speech.
