I’m not scoffing at the possiblility. Seems anyone in Russia at or over the age of military service would know how Putin’s role as supreme leader has been so far. Perhaps the disappearance of one’s entire family serves as a caution. They already have seen him in action.

George Washington, General Grant and other respected commanders have issued these exact orders.

“Fragging. 100 documented cases in Viet Nam”

Wire a frag under the dash board of an M151 with the pin wired to the clutch pedal. Stepping on the clutch pulled the pin. I heard of that one when I was over there. Heard a gun shot at the engineer outfit across the road, some guy whacked his butter bar.

I have a hunch similar things go on in the Ruskie army.

“There have also been reports of Chechen special forces being sent in to stop Russian soldiers fleeing the war, according to the Daily Mail.”

If that is true, then it will not go down very well with the Russian people — or troops. The Russian troops just might start fighting the Chechens special forces.

If this is true — and I emphasize IF — it is what the Soviets did during WWII.

Space aliens can appreciate quaint Earth handicrafts, that’s a good sign for future trade with advanced civilizations.

And who are we to judge an affair of the heart between intelligent, adult beings, no matter how much fur is in the way?

Normally I would agree but:

“If you’re a soldier, and you’re ordered to fight by your country’s legitimate government” - but these aren’t professional soldiers, they’re conscripts; they’re being given illegal orders.

Even Russia apparently has laws against sending untrained conscripts into battle zones.

Putin sent them there on the false premise they were joining in on a cakewalk mission or a training exercise. Their families were told they’d be home in a couple of weeks tops.

The conscripts were sent to the front without any decent kit, without any decent training, they ran out of food a week ago and they ran out of fuel so quickly that they’ve had to bunker down in unheated tanks in subzero temperatures. I’ve seen pictures from the field of very young Russian soldiers who froze to death - they were manacled to their outdoor posts to stop them running off.

Some of the MREs the more lucky troops did have access to, turned out to be years past their use by date. Rumors abound that some of the food they were sent out with, was dog food.

You can argue Putin and his commanders didn’t think it’d last more than a week but it’s no excuse really.

At some point, quite understandably, these kids realise they’ve been totally betrayed. Some of the stories coming out sound like they’re from Blackadder - trying to invent creative ways to get injured and escorted to safety in Belarus.

One poor sod was left on his own in charge of a tank with Ukrainians all around I think after his senior officers just ran away. Ukrainians didn’t even have to ask him to surrender. The kid was clearly petrified, didn’t have a clue what to do. So he gets out of the tank, throws his gun down, and lays face down on the ground. Had absolutely no other option, and there was no point fighting back.

Some people say, well what about the Ukrainian conscript notice that prevents fighting age men from leaving? That’s not ideal but at least it has the moral defence of informed consent - Ukrainian conscripts know EXACTLY what they’re being asked to do, and unlike the Russian conscripts they were given options. So, many of them escorted their families to the western borders and saw them safely evacuated before turning round to defend the homes they’d left behind.

Not even on page 3?

The Sun just repeats wire services or picks up stories from other papers - like most other papers, but more so. The only stories it originates are UK celebrity and crime things, if that. This story is just a statement from the Ukrainian MOD which is available on other sites.

This is a problem with having “perfect enemies”. There are all kinds of people out there with different agendas, many of whom hate you too. Many of them don’t get along with your “perfect enemies” either. Its a messy, mixed up world.

Some what standard soviet doctrine to have ‘barrage battalions (KGB) poised behind the assault echelons with orders to fire on the assault troops that weren’t aggressive enough.

In time of war US Military still has harsh if not capital penalties attached to desertion.

Not sure what I’m expecting from a dictator.

No, seriously!

National service in Russia is for one year, usually taken between the ages of 16 and 27. Draft-dodgers face heavy fines and up to two years’ imprisonment. But there are lots of exceptions and ways around that draft, including “alternative civil service”.

So the point of the service is really to make the military look bigger, and pull off big square-bashing parades. There’s no appetite for sending 16 year olds with less than six months of rudimentary training into the front line of a modern war.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/explainer-russian-conscription-reserve-and-mobilization

“Current law precludes conscripts from deploying to combat with less than four months of training; however, martial law or general mobilization could supersede the current policy, allowing for the immediate employment of new conscripts or mobilized reservists.”

Basically, Putin’s exploited a loophole to make it seem as if this operation falls into that martial law category. But he isn’t in the same boat as Zelenskyy. The only reason there are conscripts in the front lines is because Putin insisted on having this war.
