I was assigned to AFSOUTH Naples 1968-70. At that time we had 500,000 US forces in Europe excluding dependents. There was a real, legitimate fear that the Soviets posed a threat to the continent.

The collapse of the Soviet Union coupled with the rising affluence of Europe, including a united Germany, has changed the calculus of a Russian threat. Russia doesn’t have a conventional military capable of invading and occupying Europe. Russia has nuclear weapons, but their use would assure Russia’s destruction.
