All this talk about EVs seems to skip the question of new power plants to provide all this electricity we will need.
I can just imagine the HOWL when somebody suggests we’ll need 200 new generating stations. Oh sure.
pSaki has a meltdown.
"Why won't you love me?"
Agreed. They don't actually give a rat's backside about EVs, going green, or climate. They crave control. If they weren't trying to tell us what vehicles to drive they'd be trying to tell us how to run other aspects of our lives:
What light bulbs to use... Oh wait, they're already doing that, no more incandescent bulbs for you.
What washers and dryers to use... Oh wait, they're already doing that too - gotta be energy star.
How our toilets should work... Oh wait, they've specified that too via gallons per flush.
What to eat... Oh wait, they're already limiting serving sizes. (eg. soda)
How to bag our groceries... Oh wait, they've already banned plastic.
How to drink our coffee... Oh wait, they're doing that too - no plastic straw in your iced coffee.
They are literally sticking their noses into everything. Needlessly. News flash for leftists: you are not the smartest people in the room, not even close.
It is like a mental disease with them. They have some pathological need to have some say in every aspect of other people's lives. Hey leftists, leave us the {censored} alone!
Hey, the Covid-19 pandemic is dying so it’s time for the Climate Change Police to make their appearance. Stand by for more mandates.
Abstract universe the left lives in:
Just pull the $50K-&70K out of your wallet and buy an electric car (also hiring an electrician for $2K-$5K to install a charging station outside your home)
Reality universe most Americans live in:
It’s chicken, Ramen and spaghetti all week so I can afford the extra cost of gas just so I can get to work.
You can't build new fossil fuel power plants, we're going green! ;-)
I ran the numbers a couple of years ago. Given energy use at that time and efficiency of solar plants it was simple. You want to put the solar plants where they'll get the most sun - the southwest.
We would need to cover almost all of Nevada and a fair portion of Arizona and Utah with solar plants. All of it. Sorry EPA, that desert environment is now shade.
Oh, and we'd have to mine basically every ounce of copper we could find to beef up the power grid to get power out to the rest of the Country.
Oh, and we'd have to mine all the lithium and a few other exotic metals we could find too. Going to need lots of batteries and energy storage for vehicles and homes and industry because, well, night-time.
Then of course there's monsoon season in the southwest with so many storms. So we might have to go several months at reduced generating capacity so lots of batteries. Lots of batteries. Maybe we just cover New Mexico with storage cells...
I've seen the UPS battery room for a modest 3 story office building. To just keep the essentials on for 60 minutes the battery room takes up a huge space in the basement - roughly equivalent to a single story, single family home full of deep cycle batteries. To run one building for one hour, just the essential systems...
In short "going green" right now is a fantasy. The technology is no where near ready. Any attempt to "go green" in all but a few niche areas is going to be an economic and environmental failure. They want us to "go green" for the same reason they wanted us to mask up, then not mask but vax, then boost... They aren't advocating real effective policies, they're just advocating telling us what to do.
It's BIG Government. There are plenty of bureaucrats to keep busy snuffing out our freedoms. Only one way to reduce it, reduce government.
What do Harris & her ‘husband’ use for transportation????
Government vehicles paid for by taxpayers.
I have a 1979 Buick station wagon with over 221,000 miles I bought used in August 1981 with 55,000 miles.
I also have a 1976 1 ton Chevy dually truck with a granny 4 speed that has over 348,000 miles-—mostly towing horses. I bought it used in April 1986 with 90,000 miles on it.
ONLY NEW car I ever owned, I ordered & bought new in Feb 1965-—Pontiac station wagon-no power steering/ windows/ brakes/ door locks.
I sold it over 30 years later with OVER 444,000 miles on it. Still ran very well. ow wish I still had it. Got over 18 MPG.
How about submarines????
On your 1/8 acre in a subduivision.
They’re shutting down coal, gas, and nuclear; and the NIMBY’s are opposing transmission lines. So where is the power going to come from?
As electricity goes to record highs also.
What is the source of the power used to charge the EVs? Is it oil or gas? Can our reliance on oil or gas ever be fully eliminated?
Only sold at Utopia stores near you.
Interesting facts. I paid $300 for a portable level 2 charger that I plug into a 220 outlet in the garage. My concern is what is going to fuel the power plants that produce the electricity when everyone is driving electric cars?
In Virginia, my electric bill has nearly doubled and I use the same amount or less than I did last year.
