[This will be EU planes flying from an EU country to engage Russian forces.

A bit different than Vietnam]

And the danger to the EU from Russia is a lot clearer. I expect Europeans remember someone saying “This is my last territorial demand in Europe” a while back. He lied. That’s why they’re getting all angsty about Ukraine.

Russia is positioning nukes.

They have said they will use them if attacked by a NATO/EU country.

This isn’t 1939. You don’t play chicken with a nuclear power that is pretty much promising to attack

The nuclear power already attacked. Thousands are dead. Weakness in response to this murder will only bring more death in the long run. Putin won’t play with nukes because he knows his own people will Mussolini him if he does.

We’re not playing chicken with him. He’s playing chicken with us.

We’ve made nuclear threats before. They flopped, because our adversaries recognized them for what they were - empty threats. If you can get freebies by making threats, why not make them? It’s an excellent threat. Problem is it’s a toothless one.

Putin is doing this so when Russian kids name their kids Vladimir, they’ll be thinking of him instead of the original Vladimir the Great 1,000 years ago. To kill 100m Russians, and turn Russia into a Chinese province is not exactly gonna make Vladimir a popular name among what remains of Russia. Ever notice how no one calls kids Adolf any more, except as an insult? The same could happen to Vladimir if Putin decides to kill himself along with the Russian people. Putin’s not a moron. He knows that everyone dies, but it’s your reputation that lives forever. Does he really want to be known as the man who exterminated Russia?

I hope not. I really do.

But ego makes men and nations do crazy things.

Right now, there are talks to end the war. I am not sure what that would look like, but I am praying for the Christians in the area.

That’s what we’re relying on, in part - his ego. The whole point of conquering Ukraine was to raise his rank among Russia’s historical rulers. To kill Russia and hand it over to China would take this rank to the bottom of the pack. Heck, the way historical chronicles work, Putin and every single Russian ruler would vanish from history, given that Russian history would now subsumed into Chinese history. How many people have heard of the Indian chiefs who used to roam the prairie? That’s because they’re a conquered people. A Chinese Russia might remember Putin as the man who destroyed his people and gifted it to China. A healthy ego like Putin’s will resist this fate.

Ukraine is never going to be prosperous joining the EU......because it’s obvious to date they don’t want Ukraine.

Fact is they’re all using Ukraine for a stomping ground. THat’s not going to change even after this is over. NATO, US, and Eu all use Ukraine like a 24/7 laundromat. And they will in the future.

Going into the EU is their only hope at rooting out the corruption. Rule of law is the first prerequisite for prosperity, even if it is the ridiculous and smothering bureaucracy of the EU.

Ukraine ruled by Moscow would just substitute a different set of kleptocrats who are even more difficult to ever get off their neck.

If Ukraine somehow survives this war and frees itself from Putin’s army, I do think the EU will take them in.

I don’t think your explanation holds up. Neither of us can read Putin’s mind, but according to Investopedia, “Russia’s total estimated natural resources are worth $75 trillion. The country has the biggest mining industry in the world producing mineral fuels, industrial minerals, and metals. Russia is a leading producer of aluminum, arsenic, cement, copper, magnesium metal, and compounds such as nitrogen, palladium silicon, and vanadium. The nation is the second-largest exporter of rare earth minerals.” https://www.investopedia.com/articles/markets-economy/090516/10-countries-most-natural-resources.asp

Then Ukraine would be a big competitor to Russia’s products, wouldn’t they?

Putin does not want Ukraine to join the EU and follow the success of other former Eastern Bloc nations which have done so. EU regs inevitably tamp down the sort of gross corruptions that pull a country down, while creating super-rich oligarchs whose most notable skill is sucking off wealth for themselves.

Plus he wants to restore the Russian Empire (no joke, it is in his speeches.)
