There used to be an intelligent, space faring world in the vicinity, but they did not hide their existence, which announced they were competing for resources.
The first species to reach the vicinity launched a casual attack from some light years distant, then fled back into hiding.
We are just now seeing the light from the attack as the objects are being transformed from 3-4 dimensional matter into 2-dimensional existence.
They are no longer competing for anything. Sooner or later the hidden ones will see us and launch a casual attack for which there is no defense.
