What the mother is describing is what sounds like a gang initiation. Gang rites to corrupt the initiate to see if he will be useful, and to have power over him. They can hold this disgusting and heinous crime over his head if he ever gets ideas of turning on them, as well. That is, if it turns out there really were others encouraging him to do this and it wasn’t his idea alone.

I see the problem right there...his mom apparently knows he did it, yet is raising money for his defense instead of having to be held back from killing him herself. My parents would save the cops and courts a lot of trouble if they ever found out one of my brothers did something like this, and it wouldn’t matter to them if the perp was “talked into it” by others.
