Omicron variant spread: US to limit travel from 8 southern Africa countries!:
The United States will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other countries starting Monday over concerns of a “heavily mutated” COVID-19 variant, senior administration officials said.
The Biden administration will follow advice from Dr. Anthony Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and restrict travel from several African nations following the identification of variant B.1.1.529, which appears to be highly contagious among young people.
The World Health Organization (WHO) identified the variant as a “variant of concern” that officials first noted in South Africa.
The variant has been identified in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi as well.
About a dozen other countries, including the United Kingdom, will create similar travel restrictions.
Travel restrictions will not apply to American citizens and lawful permanent residents, but all international travelers must test negative prior to travel.

“The World Health Organization on Friday assigned the Greek letter omicron to a newly identified Covid variant in South Africa.
The U.N. health agency recognized the strain, previously referred to as lineage B.1.1.529, as a variant of concern. “
“Omicron, B.1.1.529, is named as a variant of concern because it has some concerning properties,” Maria Van Kerkhove,
the WHO’s technical lead on Covid-19, said in a video published on Twitter.
“This variant has a large number of mutations, and some of these mutations have some worrying characteristics.”
Data presented at a briefing Thursday hosted by South Africa’s Department of Health indicates that some of omicron’s mutations
are connected with improved antibody resistance, which could reduce the protection offered by vaccines.”
“Certain mutations could also make omicron more contagious, while others haven’t been reported until now,
preventing researchers from understanding how they could impact the strain’s behavior, according to a presentation at the briefing.
“Preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection with this variant, as compared to other VOCs,” the WHO said in a statement released Friday. “
These unknown qualities of the Omicron variant are still under research and study.
The current vaccines apparently don't control the Omicron infection, and furthermore, there is evidence of reinfection even after successful recovery.
The possibility of reinfection seems to defy previous immuneological response to earlier forms and variants of covid infection.
Since the qualities remain unknown, several European countries and the United States are considering restricting international travel from current infected nations .

I think it’s for lockdowns and swabbing, but I suppose Pfizer will roll out a new vaccine, the “O Boost” maybe.
