I like how in Japan they are grown into square shapes. That might be the Fuyu variety.

See, another allusion to Mars by way of Japan. Only this time it's a rising persimmon instead of a red sun, but what perfect timing with the fall ripenings and harvest.

This biblical persimmon plant is not related to the orange persimmon fruit of today.

That's because persimmon is hard to come by:

It is Hachiya variety. Think it was planted in 1962, probably a 2 year old tree then.

Not many people like them here. I love them when ripe and love them when properly dried and cut up on my oatmeal in the morning.

Baking with them? I’ve not found a recipe that I like.

I had just wondered out loud if the Fuyu are the ones grown into squares, being the firmer, snack fruit type. I’m sure the info is out there somewhere.

I used to live where persimmons were abundant, but forget what I used them for in cooking.

Probably some chutney-type concoction with apples and onions, so not really needing a recipe. Walnuts, cinnamon, cardamom.. who knows, lol.

There are 2 types of persimmons, Astringent and non-astringent.

Hachiya is the astringent type. Most persimmons are Astringent. You must wait until ripe to eat the Astringent, if you were to eat them green (tastes horrible) they will give you a bowel impactment.

Fuyu is non-astringent, can be eaten before it softens.

We will always have such experiences, the tiny flower in a desolate place or birds singing outside harsh building. No one, no circumstances, no matter how God-forsaken, can ever take those away.
