I can’t believe anyone anymore is paying federal minimum wage.

some states have their own minimum wage.

AK $10.34
AR $11.00
AZ $12.15
CA $13.00
CO $12.32
CT $12.00
DC $15.00
DE $9.25
FL $8.65
HI $10.10
IL $11.00
MA $13.50
MD $11.75
ME $12.15
MI $9.65
MN $10.08
MO $10.30
MT $8.75
NE $9.00
NJ $12.00
NM $10.50
NV $9.00/8.00
NY $12.50
OH $8.80
OR $12.00
RI $11.50
SD $9.45
VA $9.50
VT $11.75
WA $13.69
WV $8.75
VI $10.50
GU $8.75

most businesses around here are crying for help...promoting a 15 buck an hour starting salary.
Course, I live in a blue state...

To me nothing reveals how out of touch, small minded and myopic the true Republican rank and file are when the issue of the min. wage comes up. The GOPers get all riled up over it but when ENTIRE INDUSTRIES. like micro chip manufacturing for example, gets off shored to the 3rd world they could give a rats a$$. A pox on both houses. Believe me the “normals” see this stupidity and watch in amazement.

Plus, the feds get an increase in tax revenue without having to raise taxes.

One of my first minimum wage jobs was a dishwasher at a busy restaurant at Logan Airport. This was late 1970s so would have been $2.65/hr. Typically the manager would have two dishwashers on the dinner shift. But the guy I was paired with was a lazy bum and I ended up doing most of the work. When he was out sick, I could easily keep up with the dishes all by myself. The manager noticed and bumped me to something like $3.50/hr and let me work the shift by myself. That lasted a few months until I had to go to boot camp for the Marines. She was sorry to see me go!

Unions represent a small fraction of the workforce.

Test: What percent of the US workforce is in a union?

  1. 3%
  2. 7%
  3. 12%
  4. 24%

some people’s labor isn’t worth $15 an hour, especially 16 year-olds in their first job.

Exactly.
minimum wage is supposed to be entry level

raising minimum wage is a job killer and raises prices

Maybe 40 years ago in industrial America. In globalist post industrial America it is not. Some of these jobs are now careers...

You are free to subsidize any worker you’d like to subsidize.

But you are not free to take _my money_ to subsidize some worker you’d like to subsidize.

Where do you think the money to pay workers [or taxes or any expense] comes from? Really.

Minimum wages bans jobs not worth whatever they set as minimum.

“From what I can see, instead of fifteen cashiers in a store making $10/hour we now have maybe three at $15/hour and a load of self-check”

Most of the new Walmart self checks won’t take cash...

So your saying the price of donuts are going up. Lol. Luckily I don’t eat them much, although they are delicious. But I get what your saying. Everything is going up and it won’t get better.

That and lack of debit/credit or a welfare card doesn't seem to faze a certain demographic....just walk out with the purchase, check-out is fo' chumps.

Don’t know, don’t care.

The unions overwhelmingly support Democrats with people on the ground during elections and with campaign donations. SO Democrats push minimum wage hikes to help pay the unions for their support.

Perhaps it’s all in the words chosen. Instead of asking about “raising the minimum wage,” we should ask about “outlawing low paid jobs.”

I don’t think the law ever says that wages must be raised. I think the law says one must not pay less than the minimum wage. The jobs that currently pay less, are slated to become illegal. I expect some people ignore the law.

Employers who comply with the law now find that existing jobs will become illegal. They either let the person go - it’s the law, re-issue the job with a higher wage, or move the employee up to a higher paying job - something they would have done anyway.

Most minimum wage jobs are entry level jobs. Anyone who performs satisfactorily and continues working will get a raise.

The real question is what happens next year. Instead of hiring 6 teenagers, you hire 4.

Sure, there are unpaid limited-time internships young people take on for the experience, or perhaps a very short-term job someone working for room, board, & expenses but no wages, like a foreign au pair, but I always hated that argument. Paying $0 to an employee $0 when that person is working long-term because they need $ for living and not work experience is slavery, which is outlawed by the USC.

Minimum wage is just that: the lowest amount an employer can or will provide a worker with the worker willing to work for that amount because it would pay some bills. A true minimum wage is always more than $0. If bosses want employees to pick berries at $10/hr, but no citizens are willing to work for less than $15, and then bosses outsource to “migrants” or illegals, that is not market economics; that’s cheating the system. Market economics goes both ways. If an employer pays such low wages that no citizen will work for him, market laws dicate high demand for employees increase wages. And if demand for employment is very high because there is an exceeds of workers, wages will decrease, because employers can then pay the lowest a citizen is willing to work for.

Then again, there are citizens willing to work very short term (an hour or so) to pick their own strawberries and pay the owner $16 to pick their own 2 lbs of strawberries or $4/quart, removing the middle man (the migrant or illegal) whose low wages allow berries to get sold for $2/quart. We pay very little for some things because we have an artificial work pool willing to work for near slave wages because the government subsidizes them via free education, medical, & legal. Plus they live 11-20 in a home, whereas avg US households consist of 2.5 people. Illegals and foreign workers are what keep minimum wage artificially low. 25 years ago $5/HR for a lowskilled worker was fine. Today, inflation & cost of living increases demands at least 2.5 times more, maybe more in some places.

TL;DR: Minimum wage in a fair market economy for citizen workers will always be greater than zero, but only as much as an employer can afford to pay and as low as the citizen agrees to work for. In some cases, consumers will be willing to pay more for a product if it means eliminating the “monkey in the system” ie, the imported low-wage worker who doesn’t cost the employer much, as those costs are the tax payers’ burden to subsidize.
