Actually, the coprolites from the back of a southwest US cave are unlikely to be fossils. They are unlikely to be more than 10,000 years old and probably between 500 and 2500 years old. Now I’ve made it safe for the 6000 yo crowd. Given the very dry conditions they probably would not have decayed and are desiccated rather than mummified or fossilized. Therefore, as they regained moisture in a more humid air space there might be a slight odor. It is possible to find out a lot about diet from studying these remains. Seeds, bone and shell fragments, etc. could point to diet, and if they can go microscopic then microbiome info is also a possibility. Meanwhile try some of these probiotic drinks the grocery stores now sell. Some contain as many as 10 or 12 organisms, and some have different ones. I have tried several brands to diversify my gut. Thus becoming a “gutfull wonder.”

Another interesting fact is that doctors are now using “fecal implants”, that is doses of healthy people’s feces introduced into the rectums of people with certain kinds of illnesses to implant a better mix of bacteria to heal the gut. I wonder if they pay money to these healthy volunteers with “good” shit.
