Before the new Cold War BARs and Rem700s have been actively displacing AK platforms in civilian use here. The former in 308,the latter in 223.
I generally think that whatever semi-auto in 308 is the best deer rifle, be it BAR or AK.
Although it is not exactly my sort of game.
Tried to use Rem700 in 223 for my hare hunt. It has certain advantages, but I ended up with my Saiga anyway.
22lr semi-auto could probably serve me as great or better, but when there is always a risk to meet a Teddy or a bad hog, so I better stick to 5.45x39.
