Well... I attended IIT in Chicago 1976 for 1 year pre-med program. I quickly realized I had no interests in competing with other students and their lab/research ambitions to rank at the top for Med School dreams. Instead I wanted to work, learn and produce(in that order)... not live out of a lecture hall, cram for tests and attend late-night labs for the next 7-8 years.

So I quit. And for me that was the best decision I made.

I eventually found my calling. I became a mainframe computer operator in 1977 working in IIT’s data processing center. I immediately self-learned FORTRAN, COBOL, then assembler languages.

I was interned with the systems support staff given programming jobs to maintain the tape cataloguing system.

I then moved to NASA Johnson Space Center working for Computer Sciences Corporation subcontractor as a 3rd level Computer operator for 3 of their UNIVAC Mainframes.

I then moved to Phoenix Arizona working for a company called PCS. I was contracted to write a mailing label system for their drug card issuance shipping department.

I became very proficient with coding in UNIVAC EXEC-8 assembler.

I then moved back to Chicago where I met a guy who was involved with Goeken System (Jack Goeken is the guy who helped breakup AT&T and founded MCI).

I got hire in Chicago working for Goeken Systems as a reverse engineer. I reverse engineered numerous programs into Sperry/UNIVAC assembler originally written in a company proprietary system language of the CHI Corporation that contracted with Goeken to provide Communication FEP hardware for his FTD Mercury Network (EFOS) platform.

I then wrote several channel programs, driver interface and terminal protocol drivers to report real-time data for the Jack Goeken and company bosses.

From their I had settled in as a Systems Engineer that was responsible for OS Platform upgrades, maintenance and local OS changes when required.

After 3 years for Goeken, I ended up for 16 years working for CTA Chicago heading-up the support group for the Sperry/Univac Mapper DBS implementation that ran from a Sperry/UNIVAC 1100/62 Mainframe. We eventually upgraded over the years to a 1100/72 and then a 2200/IX enterprise system. My practical experience and ability to solve problems found nowhere in a classroom enabled me to be recognized as one of the 2 top OS Software Engineers for UNIVAC/UNISYS 1100/2200 Mainframe Systems and UNISYS MASM Assembler programmers in the Midwest. And for 16 years I was solely responsible in providing 24hr 365 days/yr on call support for the entire UNISYS IX5600 Clear Path and 2200 hardware/software platforms. Providing all DBS duties, catalogue tape and storage management along with most anything related to the entire system operation and communication need. Debugging, OS patches, local code modifications, and dump analysis/resolution for any program subsystem or OS crash.

Performed all Y2K compliance testing and was responsible for complete platform readiness.

Developed and tested UNISYS disaster recovery procedures and performed all remote offsite testing.

I contributed many patches, fixes and solutions to UNISYS 2200 support department correcting many issues with their OS, compilers and products.

On top of that I administered and maintained all system & file security. Wrote & maintained all technical and operations documentation/procedures. Designed, wrote and implemented all operations production/maintenance runs.

Indeed I left my mark and I did it My Way!

I left Chicago to retire a few years later in Las Vegas, NV.

Indeed college help open my eyes. I threw away the expensive tuition, the books and the years of nonsense I would have had to endure... and just applied myself in the real world from get go.

I saw where I wanted to go, and I just went for it. No schooling, no degrees, no wasting years on a college campus learning impractical textbook BS.

My career took me to places and people I never would have met or experienced. I solved problems a classroom would never have taught you how to solve... and contributed my skills, knowledge and code to several companies/businesses.

I have given one word of advice to many who asked me how I could have gone so far and learn so much and what I needed to know.

They asked me - “Without a computer science degree or formal education. How did you do it?”

I laughed and said... “Exactly!”

And now, you couldn’t buy a job, degree or not, as jobs in software engineering and IT are reserved 100% for Indian trash.

Before anyone gets too self-righteous, they should note that the Bible calls for the cancellation of debt on a regular basis.

.......................................................

Jesus fulfilled all O.T. laws and did so perfectly so His followers would not be bound by them. If we bind ourselves by any one of the laws, we are bound by all of them.
