Not sorry I got out of Calif. It's very sad to see this about my old hometown.
What do these have to do with "race"?
So how is “mastery” determined? Is there a TEST? So does that mean they will “teach to the test” to achieve “mastery”? And don’t they HATE “teaching to the test”?
Im a teacher. Nothing new here. Weve watered down grading since Obummer took over. Face the facts; if I look over my roster and see more than 5 La-dashiniqua names I know that class is doomed and my year just got a hell of a lot longer. Cant do anything to them, no consequences, cant fail them. Its a nightmare.
Continuing the dumbing down of America.
Why have school at all? Just give the black kids a diploma!
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Because this is aggressively racist, I think the accent is on the first syllable.
This is actually how I “graded” my son & daughter who were home-schooled. I worked with them until they clearly understood the concepts and then we went on to the next level, not really dependent on yearly requirements, standardized tests, or typical public school class grades.
But ... I don’t think it’s going to be the same in the public school system (which I also worked in for a few years). Sounds more like a way to “pass through” underachievers, “slackers” or struggling students and not be penalized for teacher/administrator failure, esp with “less advantaged (privileged)” students.
When I taught, I set my grading system up, so that a kid who made the effort to do the assigned work could pass (not get an A or B or even C, but pass) even if he got high Fs on tests. Some kids don’t do well on tests, some do. But I figured that real life is more like daily work and home work, rather than tests. I wanted my A students to have to work for their grade and I wanted to leave the door open for my not so bright ones.
The idea that work not handed in on time doesn’t lower a grade is absurd. I realize that doing things on time is a symptom of ‘whiteness’ and the mañana attitude comes from another culture that is just as good, if not better than ours (/s), but doesn’t finishing projects on time count for a lot in the ‘real world’.
And then there are the mastery tests (can they be called that?). You know that any test that shows one or two identifiable populations consistently passing and another couple consistently failing will be instantly deemed as racist and modified until the desired results are obtained.
And you thought our current ruling class was bad.
U dont hav two no notin, if u no somtin u is razsist.
How is this going to help black people be more competitive in the job market?
Upside down world....everything reads like the Babylon Bee.
This will not help any minority at all. They will not be able to get a job or hold one for very long but the school records will have glowing records of success.
Reality will bite that student while the school admins and teachers get bonus money. Incompetence is rewarded in gov’t.
The idea back then was that minorities were getting lower than average scores, but by giving them points for showing up on time and behaving in class they could get high enough scores to pass.
Sounds rather ironic that the "social criteria" they added to combat racism are now being dropped to combat racism. Very Orwellian.
Regardless, it is also my understanding that schools do not just exist to teach kids reading, writing, and arithmetic. They are also there to teach kids good habits such as showing up on time, behaving properly, completing work on time, etc.
We used to not get credit for all of these "social criteria". These were all just expected of good students who didn't want to get sent to the principals office or expelled.
