The kid was chased and cornered by a larger man trying to take his weapon, so he fired. Self-defense. Then he was chased and attacked by a mob, but only shot the specific individuals attacking him. Self-defense.
He probably won’t get a medal, but he should.

The news is reporting that the surgery required the removal of his bicep muscle. There were no reports of a fracture, or amputation. There is another picture of him holding the gun down, grimacing in pain, with his left finger trying to stop the bleeding in his forearm. Possible entry point ... was his arm extended with pistol, the bullet enter his forearm, traveled up through the bicep and exited?
You rightly described him as the attacker. There is at least one news report describing Kyle as the attacker.

That was an error. Potentially fatal. Kyle is lucky to be alive. Never go solo in a hostile environment.

Additionally, the weapon Rittenhouse was using to protect himself and others never crossed state lines.
I don't see why this is important? Unless it's a sale, I don't know of any issues with carrying your rifle across a State border? Especially since I'd guess WI is more gun-friendly than IL.
But, that then begs the question of where did he get the rifle from? All the article says is that he and a friend armed themselves with rifles that were already there...? I'm not sure on the legalities of a non-legal guardian providing a firearm to a minor? (While I disagree which such laws, they are there currently, Constitutional or not.) But this is something I haven't seen brought up in any of the news articles, even this otherwise well-detailed in OP.

I’m sorry but I couldn’t look that closely.
You must have one hell of a stomach for these things.
(Or maybe a doctor?)
Believe it or not .. I saw worse in nam but that was back when I hadn’t turned into a weeny yet. 8)
