Threatening mob surrounds car, man in crowd with AK-47 fires five shots and luckily misses, driver fires his gun then drives away. Self-defense, end of story.
Driver needs to get a good lawyer and not say another word. And beef up his security for himself and his family. He’s going to be in for some very rough times no matter what happens in the legal realm.
This really is a new Civil War.

Are experts able to determine the difference in sounds between a rife and handgun? Would this be useful in court?
Presumably both the handgun and the rifle were secured as evidence as well as the spent casings. Any holes in the car and surrounding buildings should be viewed to locate slugs. That’s better evidence than sounds.
But these days you never know. It’s Austin, land of the meek and home of the slave.
Thanks.
Yes, they can determine the difference in the sounds. We, as shooters, can also differentiate.

Lol, yes, and so could most country folk, hunters, gang bangers, cartel members, and regular shooters.
If these protesters had permits for peaceful demonstrations, there would not be any cars in the road where they are walking. Somehow the law and the rules only apply to conservatives.
About Austin Police Department system:
Hitachi Vantaras solution for APDs Phases I and II is based on Hitachi Visualization Platform (HVP), specifically edge-capture camera pods. HVP enables edge recording and analytical capabilities for remote video surveillance. With built-in 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS and optional wireless point-to-point and copper connectivity, HVP is widely used for public safety objects and integrates with nearly all critical platforms.
Essential to meeting APD goals for HALO, Hitachi Visualization Platform embeds technical sophistication into rugged thermoplastic pod enclosures that are ideal for rapid deployment in any climate, on any pole or building. These camera pods support:
Gunshot detection, to convey the location of gunfire using acoustic and optical sensors.
License-plate recognition (LPR) using high-definition and 3 megapixels (MP) for high capture rates even in low-light conditions.
Radioactive isotope detection, which helps sense, interdict and potentially prevent an attack using radioactive materials.
Video-management systems, access control, and radar.
Computer-aided dispatch (CAD) and 911 systems.
Video analytics, intelligent routing, bonding and failover.
Cloud-managed bandwidth monitoring and configuration.
Third-party cameras.

Here’s a link to the Statesman: https://www.statesman.com/news/20200725/man-shot-to-death-during-downtown-austin-protest-idrsquoed-by-family
They give the story from protesters.. The man in the car honked his horn, made the right turn then sped off until he hit a barrier. The protesters approached the car and the driver got out firing shots. Only then did several peaceful protesters shoot their rifles.
I had to chuckle a bit over your post. I know I was reading English but, Wow!, I didn’t understand much of the high tech stuff.
I get it though. The scene was very likely video taped and the police have the means to figure out who did what to whom.
...killed by a motorist who had threatened protesters with his car.
They can only tell the "speeding motorist" lie so many times.
The Austin Police Chief (at least I think that is who he was) gave a report to the press today. It was reported on the 5 o’clock news this afternoon on one of the Austin TV stations. According to that police spokesman, the man in the car who shot the guy with the rifle called police after he left the area and then met with the police. They took him in (I believe) and listened to his story.
The guy in the car told the police that the man he shot had pointed his rifle at him, and he responded by shooting the guy with the rifle. The police let the guy in the car go.
A guy in the crowd shot at the car a number of times as it was leaving. The police picked that guy up too, and later also let him go.
I gather that both of those two guys who met with the police had carry permits.
I have also heard that the crowd began beating on the car when it turned onto the street and stopped.
One TV station here did not present the police press report, but featured one of the marchers who gave a his own version of the incident.
More info will doubtless come out in the future.
