Has America ever had a more crazed mayor than Seattle's Jenny Durkan?

Elected judges, sheriffs usually run unopposed which makes a mockery of the whole purpose to make them accountable to the people.

There seems to be some sort of presumption that an elected judge or elected sheriff needs to have experience in the field. On the surface it seems a reasonable presumption but then why elect them?

Donald Trump had no experience as a candidate for political office before he became President. Yet he’s the best President in modern history if not before.

In the case of elected judges, no prior knowledge or experience of the law or legal procedures is necessary.

Say what?

All that is necessary for an elected judge to perform well as a judge is to have a staff of law clerks that can do the legwork on cases and then summarize in a way that is understandable to an intelligent, analytical, insightful, compassionate, and hopefully spiritual mind that was elected by people to make courts work for people and not as a world separated from ordinary beings.

That may sound like a bunch of hooey but that is how Donald Trump operates. He uses common sense. good judgment, practical perspectives, focused inquires and gets advised on what is and what is not legal, what are best courses of action going forward, assessment of possible scenarios, Trump receives intel and advice from all quarters and sometimes steps out of the circle surrounding him and then makes a clearly seen decision of how things must be in terms of continuing to hold the trust of Americans.

If he let others with ‘experience’ lead him here and there, he would lose his relationship with the people and become a failed President.

A situation I encounter a few times a year is meeting someone who wants to be my sales lead and often I hear such persons say “I have 30 years” experience. That can be good but it is my responsibility to check if the volume of experience is valuable or has the person just repeated the year one experience thirty times? Or worse, has the person developed a bad repertoire of lame experiences learning to dress them up as somehow successful?

A classical violinist might say I have 30 years experience playing violin yet they never played with the best or were seen as the best unless they were first violinist in a section of mediocre violins.

So it is with elected anything. If the elected is smart, sensitive to voters, can talk enough of the language of the office, and evaluate the evolution of the ‘corporate memory’, they need not know details of the subject field. They only need translators and knowledge of the integrity, and talent of those translators in the field. And if such translators fail to maintain accuracy and integrity, they are to be fired regardless if they have thirty years experience being inaccurate and lacking integrity. That’s Donald Trump.

An elected sheriff need not know a thing about police work if they have competent staff and a way of testing those staff. What’s important is the voters who elected the sheriff trust their choice over the long haul. An elected sheriff’s first call to duty is to establish and maintain an open and clear channel of communication and information with the voters.

There you go.

But unfortunately, such a common sense view as above is seldom seen because insiders don’t like outsiders.

Simple silly example:

An elected sheriff doesn’t know how to pin a badge properly. A supportive agent will approach and ask with respect “may I show you how the badge is worn?” The approaching agent treats the elected sheriff with respect because the newly elected sheriff has the trust of the voters and the voters are to be respected. Respecting and helping an elected sheriff translates to respecting the will of the people. But this scenario is unfortunately not as prevalent as it should be. More often agents will scurry away muttering “the new know-nothing sheriff can’t even put a badge on right.” This is not the fault of a new inexperienced sheriff, this is a problem of lifers losing sight of what’s important and developing an unproductive attitude that helps nothing.
