What about the CAUSES of the irresponsible behavior?
America's high school seniors didn't cause student loans to be Federally guaranteed. They didn't allow them to be assigned to students labelled "student aid" or "scholarship package". They didn't vote to make them not dischargeable in bankruptcy. They didn't create a world where students who don't belong in college are encouraged, even driven, to go there anyway.
Do you know field trips to universities are starting in fourth and fifth grade, to make nine year olds start to "dream their own dreams", which of course are not their own at all?
Yes, responsibility and keeping your word (which our society despises, in case you haven't noticed) is important. But this is a singularly poor domain for making the case.
The punishment for the student loan disaster should be meted out to the architects, who will, in all likelihood, escape scot free.
All good points. I do wonder if you think those loans should be paid back by those who took them.
I think they should be but I’m open to the schools paying half because their extreme tuition costs are artificially high so they can pay their elitist teachers and administrators an artificially high wage. The schools own half the responsibility. Student grades and test results to find out if they are mentally able to realistically understand the course work, let alone get a passing grade, is reasonably possible.
The student is partially culpable and paying that loan back can be considered a life lesson for not believing something that sounds too good to be true.
I’m not clear on who you mean when you say the architects of these loans. Some clarity on that would be appreciated.
The architects are the schools (who wanted the money, but wanted it guaranteed AND wanted its status as a LOAN to be concealable) and the Congress, who wanted to allow the families of people too stupid to go to college (millions and millions of them) to get a chance to “dream”, courtesy of their congressthing.
Under the Dems, SUCCESS is punished. Failure is applauded.
I paid for every penny of my college courses...and I was working overtime—sometimes 6 days a week in those years. Didn’t have a social life for over 4 years, but it was worth it.
A college student today who would work to pay his tuition while going to school would have to earn >$100 000/year to pay the bill.
Got it. I don’t think the congresscritters will ever be held accountable though.
Look at Barney Frank and Chris Dodd; the architects of the Great Depression and housing bubble that burst and caused a cascading housing price and stock market fall followed by big unemployment and worldwide recession.
They were never held accountable. Of course they didn’t do this alone. Other congress people and George W Bush had to all go along with it. This was one of W’s biggest mistakes. Believing the CIA that Saddam had the weapons of mass destruction they said he did was his other big one. That was the deep state working hard to manipulate the President and US citizens into believing there was no choice but to enter into a full fledged war.
Once in a great while the left does get something right. That CIA farce was one of them. They said it wasn’t true and they were right.
I recently read that the CIA came up with the term “conspiracy theory” because, wait for it, people were uncovering their conspiracies so they used this phrase to mock/ridicule those who could see behind the curtain.
It does make one wonder if this makes the CIA along with the scandal ridden FBI leadership members of/on the domestic terrorist list.
