Yes, we could have done more. But you bring up an interesting point about disease contagion. You say the cases in GA and FL are coming from Italy. But we know ground zero was Wuhan. I don’t know how long this virus incubates or just how easy to spread but the further away and the more hops it takes the more time we have to act. We shut down travel from China right away - Italy did not, or, they had a large contingent of infected people fly in during a short period of time.
I agree, it will get worse from here before it gets better. And I am sure more steps will be taken shortly to contain the spread. I don’t think we’re all that well equipped to test for it among the populations, and unless you have the direct symptoms or a reason to believe you may be infected I think it would be a burden on the health care system to test people just out of fear. But agree all incoming travelers should at least have a temperature reading and list the places they visited. Maybe soon a quick and accurate test can be rolled out so all incomers can be tested for the virus in minutes.
I do worry most about places like NYC where it is very crowded and people are touching the same surfaces by the tens or even hundreds of thousands every day like subway grip bars, public staircase rails, etc. Rural America, well you have these anecdotes of people who came in from Italy but I would guess - not being an expert - that the risk of those vacationers spreading the disease is much lower. And there are so few of them, that it will be easy to track down who and where they made contact to clean up and quarantine and monitor. For now I pray for the best.
Funny, I just renewed my license online. Did you see if you are eligible for that? I know that after a certain age or number of years they want a new eye test and photo, but I was able to get 5 more years.
But you have a good idea - they should just automatically extend all licenses by 1 year.
Better yet - line them up in front of big trenches, shoot them and then bulldoze them in, pour in a lot of gasoline and burn them, then cover them over with dirt and then pave over the area with 2 feet of reinforced concrete...
Riiiight?
Has Pence every really inspired confidence?
But we don’t know who the ultimate non-decision maker is here.
Screening doesn’t do much good in this case, of course.
Anyone coming back from a high risk area should do so on secure transit—from the area to their quarantine.
Sam, EVERYONE in my wife’s circle of gym/workout friends had this in Dec./early Jan. Two guys I know had it. Four weeks ago, I had an extremely mild cold (went away in 12 hours-—usually it takes 10 days). We know this China Virus was around much, much earlier.
What I’m wondering is if it wasn’t already here in Dec., that people got it, most sloughed it off and got immunity, and the few who died were attributed to “other causes” cuz they didn’t know what it was?
Feel free to go to ATL airport and greet these incoming from Italy and say it was just the FLU you are fleeing .
I agree. .
Trump thinks its like the Flu .
Yeah, I hope we can luck out with this thing—particularly given the laxness with which we’ve responded in some ways.
I hope so too .
Our responses has been embarrassing compared to rest of the First World.
Ummm - part of my normal “Flu-type” precautions would be to not go to the Atlanta airport to greet high-risk folks....why are so many of you “we gotta panic and we gotta panic in a big way” folks so obtuse?
Interesting... I got the flu *for the first time ever* (along with my youngest son) right around New Year’s Day. Took tamiflu generic and rested. Now I’m wondering if it was the China virus... son tested positive for the flu so I didn’t even bother...
Trapped in Milan it looks like Rochelle, Rochelle will finally be able to travel to Minsk.
I was thinking about this post of yours, as lately many reports of people with the virus say they lose their sense of smell. I don't know if that is what you were driving at with this point or not, but it stuck with me.
Heard Cuomo today say it is "likely" NYC was infected in November or December. So it is possible. Maybe when they get some antibody blood tests available you can see if you were in fact infected early on.
