4. Doubtful that the employer is required to pay FICA.

That depends on exactly what type of visa it is. H1B holders ARE REQUIRED to pay FICA (and employers must match). Holders of F1 OPT visas pay NO FICA (and employers do not have to match). In addition they are exempt from state and local income taxes.

F1 OPT a much bigger problem than H1B IMHO because the sheer numbers dwarf H1B, and money-hungry universities who are desperate for the tuition get to rubber-stamp the visas.

Yet it is bad news for the U.S. economy — and for the future of a nation with an aging work force and a declining birthrate.

We have a miseducated workforce. The people who are aging are the only ones who know how to get anything done. H1B's cannot save us from the intentional destruction of our education system by the collectivists - they would only serve as a Band-Aid for a while.

Funny how some of these “Capitalists” don’t like the law of supply and demand when it comes to the cost of labor.

These cheap labor policies are socialism in reverse. Socialism for the rich paid for by the middle class.

F1 OPT — are they “working” as in being paid? When you mentioned universities, that means the person is a “student” correct?

I realize that students can work on campus as TAs and maybe even professors or in the cafeteria. I would think that this is rare.

Since 1990, the H-1B visa program has let companies temporarily employ foreign workers in occupations requiring specialized skills and a bachelor’s degree — when they struggle to find a U.S. worker to do the job.

Would it not be better and smarter to do something to get America skilled or qualified for these type jobs?

It would be nice if people were honest instead of trashing American workers.

Honesty means telling the dirty little secret truth that employers want to pay well qualified employees substandard wages and shortcut on taxes (in some cases). Something that they can get away with with foreign workers but not with American citizens. Skill level and degree certification probably have little to do with it.

Reminds me of the claim that illegal aliens are doing the jobs that Americans refuse to do. Well of course. An American worker has the right to demand a fair and competitive wage vs the illegal alien’s substandard wage that is paid under the table. And that the employer contribute to FICA and the American citizen’s retirement.

It is really mindboggling that IT is fundamentally a brain industry—it relies on brain power—and yet the industry leaders do not nurture and take care of the US workers or their brainpower.

Unless a company's core business is IT, they see it as just another ugly but necessary expense and want it done as cheaply as possible - like landscaping and janitorial services - to minimize possible deleterious effects on the executive bonus pool. :)

The added comment (last) is definitely correct.

Someone tell Boosh and Bill Clinton. Ah but they don’t care if Americans are out of work. They’ve got their hundreds of millions of dollars piled up and big properties in various locations.

Same with Manchurian Candidate Barack Hussein Obama. He was all too happy to put Americans out of work and keep Americans out of work.

Yes. They are "students" (mainly grad students) here on an F1 student visa. While enrolled they can apply for a "conditional practical training" (CPT) visa which lets them work while they study. Some are enrolled in a school in California while working in New Jersey (which raises the question WHY do we issue student visas so they can take an online correspondence course?)

After they graduate they can apply for an "Optional Practical Training" (OPT) visa that lets them work in the US for one year. Originally the idea was that they gain some practical experience that they could then take back and use to help build their home countries.

Almost none of them do that. Under Bush or Clinton (don't recall which) they gave STEM majors the ability to extend their OPT to three years. At the end of that time if they haven't got a Green Card or figured out some other visa situation many of them re-enroll in another university grad program and start the whole process over.

This is, as you can see, an absolute money minting enterprise for universities. I know of one in Kentucky that has TWICE the number of grad students as undergrads. You can see why.

[Headline translation: H1B’s needed in order for employers to continue to engage in age discrimination.]

Correctamundo.

and still the big “American” companies won’t hire some of our best American engineering and science graduates....
preferring instead to import foreigners from communist China (and India and other places)... they work cheap but even more importantly they are easier to control (since the boss can not only fire them but also deport them)

in USA we work hard to encourage youngsters to take STEM (science technology engineering and math) majors. But many don’t... they can see that they will face discrimination in hiring in USA since they are not citizens of Communist China or India

Invasion sustainability REQUIRES crappy public schools.

Very many research departments don’t just hire scads of Indian and Chinese now, they DEPEND on them. As in they might not be able to “make it” without them.

The need for minds disciplined by observing a set of fixed rules, embracing those and then showing creativity in new, productive ways of working within that framework is TOTALLY UNDIMINISHED, even with the decline of union-dominated publik Skools.

The need for math & science today remains steady as before, even with US kids learning about how boys can have PERIODS, about how Plymouth Rock was all about GENOCIDE, about how Indians were all joyously, peacefully whirling around in colorful harvest festivals until acquisitive, green-fanged Christian fundamentalists arrived on-scene and STOLE it all from them, clapping them all into chains while doubled-over, laughing about it.

In order to continue, the invasion NEEDS for our kids to learn nothing in school, the better to maintain the requirement for dusky invaders with minds not raised under those demented conditions.

The right has totally ceeded the skool sistum to The Left.

Oh dear God. Doctors and nurses you are next on the list to be usurped by foreign nationals via H-1b. Teachers are on deck. No profession is safe when you think about it.

There are already nurses and teachers here on H1B.

For the most part working at inner-city hospitals and schools in places like Baltimore where Americans are now afraid to work.

It will spread. The fact that most teachers belong to unions keeps this somewhat at bay.

But I thought robots were taking over all the jobs!? Who needs imported voters, oops, I mean laborers? Let the few children of the currently aging workforce take over those few jobs that won’t be done by robots.

Sorry, this media BS is just about importing voters who won’t object to their socialist rulers. The media is all about bringing in people who are for free stuff, not freedom. Trump is already moving forward on a program to bring in qualified immigrants who want freedom.
