I had the layout of the berthing quarters backwards. I thought the ladder (stairs in landlubber-speak ;D) went up at the aft end of the berthing and the E exit was foreward. Actually the ladder went up to the forward end of the galley and the E exit was at the aft end of the same galley. Both berthing exits led to the galley.
I had read that more dive boats are insisting on LIPO charging out on deck. IMO, given what I know about the battery technology, I agree with this change, and for the reasons I noted.
If it were me, I'd insist that everyone charge their LIPOs in a fireproof, explosion-proof battery charging bag. These are cheap and plentiful on Amazon. If any passenger gave me any lip about having to use them, I would point to this disaster and ask if 'being cool' is worth dying for?
With official consideration of the cause now being directed at the battery chargers, I expect that a lot of boat operators are going to take the necessary steps to protect themselves and their customers.
I did a search after reading your post. For those who want to understand the issues with LIPO batteries more. This guy sounds right up your ally.
