Biden is one of those Democrats who were supposed to be popular with Middle America - Humphrey, Muskie, maybe Mondale - because they weren't as far left as other Democrats.
But somehow it never really worked out for them. They didn't really excite anybody. Not the left-wing certainly. But not the rest of the party either. Or the rest of the country.
If a candidate's advantages are all negative - not radical, not a raving ranter, not too unsettling for people - it can be hard for voters to find something positive in the candidate that will get them to the polls.
