I have served in two denominations. I call it Churchianity (Cultural Christianity).

The buildings, ornate or simple, were built to serve a purpose, not to be the purpose.

The problem is France owns the building. It will be interesting to see how much influence the RCC has in the rebuild.

That's right...the arrangement was made in the early 1900s but it seems the lingering legacy of that maniacal and demonic episode of the French Revolution. We've been playing prevent defense since 1789. I'm sick of it. No more quarter to liberalism.

I personally think if it is to be rebuilt, put it back the way it was.

Eminently sensible.

Also to expand on what Mrs. Don-o said, the secularists would love to turn Christianity into a religion of small gatherings in homes with no external symbols or manifestations. They want to isolate it, privatize it, and control it. And eventually extinguish it.

The culture should be infused at all levels with the kingship of Christ...from every building to every home. The medievals were absolutely right to make churches the largest, most beautiful, and most important buildings in any city....it was a physical proof of the idea that God was most important. A society that put its time and money where its mouth was.

Making Christianity increasingly a matter of private faith and minimizing external observances has served Old Scratch and his liberal minions very well. Now everyone can see, as Mrs. Don-O said, where our grandest building efforts go: temples to Mammon.

Maybe the real battles being waged are not over small or large buildings.

I am interested in your take on this: https://pjmedia.com/richardfernandez/the-three-colors-of-martyrdom/

Tacrolimus1mg, I'm sure I've never seen that name before,so you're a nooby, yes? Welcome to Free Republic, and I hope your stay with us will be fruitful.

Since I don't know you, my insights will be limited (and I don't have intuition anyway: my husband's the one with the intuition) but let me venture to say this about you: I doubt you really have no faith.

I am a doubter in my own way. When I was in my teens, I left the Catholic Church, and for the most pathetic drivel: feminism, sentimental utopianism, whatever was in the air in the late-60's, early-70's. (I'm not projecting this onto you. This is just me, then.)

But after a number of years wandering, at not at one point but at many points, I was led to be skeptical of my skepticism.

Ha. Question Skepticism. I don't do tats, f I had tattoo, maybe that would be it.

I won't tell you the whole tale here in public before all the eyes of FReep, but if you would be interested, I could Private Message you some of it.

Anyway, your goodwill toward Christian believers and your lack of disdain, and in particular your evident openness to gratitude toward good things and good people (you have been treated kindly by others, and you know it) -- these are all signs of a soul who is --- how shall I say? --- still holding onto the calling cards of the Holy Spirit.

There's still life there, even if it is life in embryo.

It's Good Friday. May I pray for you today?

And ---this is just by way of experiment --- will you pray for me?

I just read the Richard Fernandez article you linked to.

A million Skellig Michaels.

What he said.

If you’d like to pray for me, please do. I never say, “No,” to anyone who asks. And while prayer isn’t something that I do, I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and hope that this Good Friday has left you well.

If you would like to have further discussion by private message, you can shoot me one any time.
