As someone who is passible in English and can kind of mangle five other languages at a minimal level, I applaud your post—and I’m also guessing your father was also an absolute genius or you yourself are on the older side. In the 1920’s good high schools would still give people the rigorous background they needed to take on such a task, but things declined steeply over the next 40 years.
