It sounded like a Hollywood comedy, a free-for-all broken up by a toupee. It’s probably good that Barksdale lost his hair, because without that comedic moment, it might’ve ended up with serious injuries to the members.
Heh, yeah. Sen. Sumner is regarded by many historians as “heroic”, but I think he was deliberately stirring the pot to foment sectional hatred. A true statesman in the 1850s would’ve been working on peaceable means to phase out slavery without resorting to warfare.
As for Fort Sumter, that was named for a Revolutionary War hero, General Thomas Sumter.
