President Trump decided to postpone because Pelosi said to do so. He didn't have to cave. He can give SOTU wherever he wants and just send a copy of the speech to Pelosi.

President Trump repeatedly swore not to end the shutdown unless he got border wall funding only to fold like a cheap suit.
