I can see it in my mind’s eye. It must have taken all the discipline he had in the world to not have emptied a mag at the press on that beach. I remember in the spring of ‘69 steaming of Yankee Station with the Enterprise when the Norks shot down one of our EC-121 spy planes and our taskforce was ordered to steam to a point off Pyongyang ASAP. So we get to our staging point maybe two days later and one of my seaman gets a Time Magazine in a care package his momma sends him from Texas. I’m in charge in the radio shack when he opens the box and see the cover of Time with an artist’s rendition of the Enterprise and us six escorts heading north to N.Korea. The date of the magazine was around a day after our plane was shot down.
