Um yeah. Read the link, Florence was a Cat 4 when that was measured.

Are you sure it wasn't a cat 6? This is the East Coast we are talking about

*** “Did that protocol change more than a few minds about evacuation?” ***

Don’t know I had to go move my family and then beat feet back to work at Command Center.
I didn’t make it, which I did not do, by the time I got back it was already Pitch Dark at 3:00 PM and Tornadoes everywhere, even though I was in Uniform I was turned back by LE and they told me to follow them as they had the route updates of passable roads... Andrew was a Beast

Category 6 hurricanes only happen in Texas where the wind seems to get a little stronger.

Glad you lived to tell about it. I lived in Japan when Andrew hit, 1992, I think it was. We even donated to financial aid the Japanese government was collecting, a nice gesture, I thought because nobody else helps the USA in disasters.

In January of 1995, we were in a major earthquake and it wasn't long thereafter before I saw big burly American construction workers on my commuter train. I found out that the Japanese government issued "construction training visas" (a new category) almost overnight because these guys were needed. They waived the usual visa fee and just told the guys when they arrived at the airport to go to the nearest immigration office and get their visa renewed before the 90 day limit was up.

I found it interesting that Americans got preference in this case!

I was on aboard the Saratoga in ‘64 and ‘65. I reported for duty at Mayport just as hurricane Dora hit the base. The ship was naturally out at sea but I nearly drowned before ever getting on board. We rode out another storm later on that had waves breaking inside the hangar deck and spray raking the flight deck. We had eleven degree rolls to each side for a total of 22 degrees. I stood on deck and watched a destroyer go out of sight time and time again and I was very glad not to be on it. It was finally ordered to come in behind the wake of the carrier for shelter until the storm ended. There were people throwing up for hours and hours but I never had the slightest bit of seasickness. A lot of those guys were furious because they were so miserable and I was feeling great. They asked why I didn’t get sick and I told them that it might be because I grew up in the sticks with very little entertainment and when a strong wind came up my older brother and I would go and find a tall, skinny tree to climb and ride it back and forth in the wind.

HAHA, you are like me, enjoying the moment as long as we are safe. I was stationed at the USCG Base Mayport on the buoy tender Sweetgum ‘86-’88. Saw the Saratoga sail many times, she was a beauty. Glad you made it off her safe and with some good stories:)

Caught the leading edge of hurricane Marie on an empty DP tanker northwest of Trondheim. It was rolling quite a bit even with DP.

It was a very beautiful place in the 80’s, old shipmate still lives there and it has gone completely down hill unfortunately.

Holy cow! That is incredible.

Prayers for those liviing in its path. Bet those who chose not to evacuate are deeply regretting that decision.

LOL! Of course, had Hillary won, the ocean would be calm, every day would be sunny, there would be no more racism, etc. In short, life would be perfect. /s
