You miss my point. Crimea has been Russian since 1783, far longer than the Southwest or Alaska have been part of the USA.

Kruschev transferred Crimea to Ukraine INSIDE THE USSR as part of a political deal. Recently, Russia took it back.

If you want to set your hair on fire over the RE-annexation of Crimea, fine by me. Those who understand geopolitical history will not be joining you.

You are mixing the Crimea with a couple of other hot spots in the area.

Ad hominin attacks do not help your argument.

Not moot.

We can use that as long as we want as an excuse to deny Russia all kinds of things, or as a grounds for sanctions, etc.

What we can’t have at this late date is countries thinking its OK to invade their neighbors. WWII isn’t that long ago, and we went to war over Kuwait (granted, oil was at stake).

China invading anybody has to make everybody nervous.

The perspective I lacked until very recently is that Russia’s economy is roughly the size of NY State. You can’t square that against the infrastructure it would take to launch a major war.

Their Syrian adventure has to be really hurting them economically. If the US gave Russia a secure way out of Syria to stop that bleeding, that’s not insignificant.

Hey! Lookie there!

The disgraced Neoconservatives have graduated from the timeworn “Putinista” charge to “Bolshevik”!

LOL. If the cause of Russia invading Crimea was just there would be no reason to air brush history. If the Putin’s case for Crimea was as you say there would have be no need to take the Crimean parliament at gun point with Russians from Moscow.

When Democrats use your “logic” to eject ICE from California I will LMAO at you naive armchair isolationists.

Crimea has been Russian since 1783. It’s a neocon fantast to think Sevastopol will ever be turned into a NATO Navy base.
This stamping our feet would make as much sense as Russia saying it will never accept California being part of America.

Western Ukraine (Lemberg/Lwow/Lviv) and its hinterlands in Galicia and Volhynia are historically Central Europe. If they want to join the Visegrad group, especially if Vienna gets in, I’m fine with that.

The Donbass and Crimea are Russia, period, end of story.

The unitary Ukrainian state is a fiction, not worth the dusty bones of a Pomeranian grenadier, as the saying goes.

Whether the US should be involved at all in saving (again) a Europe bent on suicide is unclear. For myself, I’d vote “no”.

Fixed it.

The same can be said about Russia.Unlike Russia, nobody has ever accused Ukraine of being the prison of nations.

Anyone who thinks Russia will give up Crimea is crazy.

They can and will go to global thermonuclear war to hold it. It’s their only warm-water port and biggest naval base.

Those who are pushing for Russia to release it are a serious threat to the continued existence of mankind.

Crimea and access to the Black Sea has been a Russian project since the 1600’s and indeed has been part of Russia for the last 250 years. So whether as a “negotiating chip” or a bow the the US deep-state, this is a stupid red-line to draw.

The Ukraine pre-2014 was a failed, still-born state. Whether due to Russian meddling, EU meddling, US meddling Soros games, or simply the weight of history, its politicians were not so much interested in establishing a functioning, truly independent state, as much as they were interested in looting the place. They had 25 years to make a start, and they failed. That’s something no American politican can fix.

Obama and his clique pushed the Ukraine over the edge. They placed an asinine and ill-considered, long-shot bet that when they promoted the Euromaidan Protests and the Ukraine Revolution that this fragile government and people wouldn’t fall into a proxy civil war and that Russia would not respond. Now the Ukraine is broken - forever. Crimea and the Donetsk and Luhansk are never coming back. Perhaps with their rump remaining, Ukrainians will be motivated to form a truly politically and culturally independent country. I don’t know - perhaps that is part of US strategy.

But for Trump to simply take on the burden of the wreck caused by Obama is simply not very smart for him, or for the USA.

Crimea is certainly within the Russian sphere of influence. As someone else posted it’s not worth the life of one American, let the UN handle it.

It’s the Baltic republics that concern me. Does NATO really declare war if Putin moves to occupy them?

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the United States will never recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea and will continue to insist that Ukraine’s territorial integrity be restored.

He must also believe Victoria Nuland was really just handing out cookies when she went over there.

A monumentally petulant reply. Alluding that Matt is a Bolshevik is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read on FR.

NeoCons determine who Crimea belongs to, not the people who live there. What are you thinking?
