It would have been worse to make them ride in the patrol cars. Since the kids showed receipts, the police could have called the manager on video chat on their cell phones and had him make an ID on the spot. Or asked him for more detailed description, such as clothing. These kids probably did not look like thugs, but more like Urkel, in view that they were at the college early to orientate for STEM studies. You know, "clean and articulate."
If you are white, you could have. If you are black, you risked being arrested for resisting, or might have become scared and started to run if the cops started ordering you to stop, and then you might have taken a bullet.
I don't blame the kids for feeling intimidated. If they had resisted based on their rights, people on here would be calling them stupid and saying they should have cooperated and none of that would have happened.
If these facts reported are correct, this was a dumb move on the cops' part. Perhaps they did tell the kids with receipts they could go, and only detained the ones with no receipts, but their friends may have refused to leave them. Or maybe the kids did mouth off and got out their video phones right away.
We weren't there, so I hope they can resolve this without riots. The poor IHOP franchise will probably be targeted, which appears to have had no responsibility for this poor police work.
They must have watched Chris Rock's "How Not To Get Your Ass Kicked By the Police".

Young black men tend not to comply with the police these days.
Particularly if they can hang their hat on something, like having a receipt.
Only two did not have receipts, and they volunteered to go back to the IHOP, yet the police frog-marched the whole group.
I hope they get lawyers.

A classic. Chris Rock won't even perform on college campuses any more because of the snowflakes and SJWs having no sense of humor about race whatsoever. I'm amazed YouTube still allows the Dean Martin Roasts to stay up. The various ethnic comedians of the post Civil Rights era teased each other mercilessly on that show and everyone roared.

Which proves only that they paid for something. Perhaps they ordered more after the waitress left the check. My friend did that at lunch today, got some food to take home to her kid.
The manager should apologize since it was the entirely wrong group of people.
