perhaps too early, just looking at possibilities.

“This was a very long span and then they used very heavy material,” he said. “The majority of pedestrian bridges are steel.” Steel bridges are about one-tenth the weight of concrete, he said.

...

I’ve seen long steel pedestrian bridges over the turnpike for decades. They are probably a lot cheaper, too.

Here's a great dessert idea---Jasper Johns' iconic three-tiered flag becoming a layer cake.

Okay-----serve a second cake decorated like the French flag.

I think this was a pure constructor screwup.

See this video animation of the bridge:

https://youtu.be/5Y_71L35CvM

This shows a cable-stayed bridge design. The upper stays were not in place, yet they had no temporary supports at the midpoint of the bridge until that tower on the one side was constructed and the cable stays in place. There was nothing providing necessary up force, and the bridge was simply not able to support itself.

I don’t think this had a thing to do with tweaking the tension on the post-tensioning cables/tendons. Or if it did, that was not the root of the problem.

The center’s director, Atorod Azizinamini, recognized by the White House in 2016

One of Obama's crew?

It appears the bridge was a fully suspended bridge without center supports. Why wasn't the bridge suspended and stress tested on the side of road where it was constructed before it was moved into place? So many questions - - - concrete composition, sufficient cure time, weird support design of the triangulation support system and only one center support running down the center of the span, which would increases side to side flexing and buckling. Was concrete fractured during moving.

As long as the project met its minority ‘goals and quotas’, it’s difficult to see what the problem is here.

Sounds like a problem with pre tightening and post tightening in relation to moving the bridge around. Sounds like they may have cracked it during moving.

I used to do construction and one mantra was "if you don't start out right, you don't end up right." This whole idea was a disaster from the get go.

Trumps tariffs caused this. They could not afford steel so went with concrete. /s

One would think there would some cctv footage of the bridge collapsing, particularly if “stress testing” was being conducted and FDOT officials were present at the time of the collapse.

FIU started a center to “advance the frontier” in the field in 2010 after identifying a need for more engineers trained in the method. Since launching in 2011, the center has drawn 4,000 people to its webinars, according to the website. In 2016, it became one of just 20 accelerated building programs nationwide to receive federal funding that amounts to $10 million over five years.

The center was not formally involved in constructing the pedestrian bridge.

The center’s director, Atorod Azizinamini, recognized by the White House in 2016 as one of the world’s leading bridge engineers, said the method is safer and more efficient than conventional construction methods.

Obama’s democrat government, spending democrat money, by democrat politicians in a democrat-controlled city in a democrat congressional district? “We don't need no stinkin’ engineers!”

When will we find out the construction company hired “day laborers” (i.e. Illegal immigrants), who did less than adequate work?

In almost all bridge or building collapses, he added, construction is at fault, not design.

This walkway component was a length of 175'. If the engineer/designer didn't allow for the full, finished 'service load'...see Florida.

You have to build the arc in.

And that's just the bottom deck. Add in the weight of the trusses and cover and imagine the arc needed. (there's a formula to figure this all out)

It's a good thing he said "almost"!
