a large number of trainees that come in that quite frankly just physically don’t have the capacity to throw a hand grenade 20 to 25 to 30 meters
I am a senior citizen and can Still throw a grenade 25 yards!!

As someone that carried and used grenades in combat I find this sad.

Throwing a hand grenade a hundred feet? Is that what has always been required?

What happened to "set back"?
If you failed to achieve the goals every two weeks you were "set back" to try again.
That was a powerful motivator!
I wish that they would implement it in schools.

The new BCT does, however, do away with hand grenade qualification and land navigation course qualification as graduation requirements. Hand grenades are one thing, but no land nav?!?!? This is one of the most quintessential skills possible for all soldiers.

I understand what they are saying but can’t they teach them to throw? Then once they know how it’s just a matter of practice. Seems like you could have a pile of grenade sized rocks at one side of a section. Throw them to the other side. Go to the other side. Throw them back.

“..theyre just not strong enough,...”
and herein lies a very serious problem now and in the future for society. Running and throwing should be a strong suit for every American child. Beside reading, writing and arithmetic, school must have an equal emphasis on physical education, and everyone graduating should be able to perform basic physical activities.

When I was in Basic Training in 1973, we tossed a few dummy grenades, then were taken to the grenade range where we each got to throw 2 live grenades over a cement wall. That’s all the training we had. It wasn’t much more than the “bayonet training” we had. The Drill Sgt told us that if we were down to just having a bayonet, the best option was to turn around and run like hell, because the enemy was going to shoot you. Needless to say, our bayonet training was extremely limited.

They are cutting corners on land navigation, too?

Teach them how to hop on a live grenade then since they are unable or unwilling to throw one away from them and their team.
Even if YOU may not ever throw a grenade at someone, doesn’t mean you won’t still have to deal with one in war.
