Russia generally favors Syria because it’s as modern and secular a state as they can imagine existing in the region, and so therefore the least of all evils.
Had the NATO countries seen things that way in the Obama period, the Syrian civil war could have been averted or at least confined to much smaller battles, and ISIS would have had more difficulty getting a start.
We should be open to the idea that a much different alignment of interests in the Middle East might have many benefits in geopolitical terms. Some of Trump’s support was based on that realization and the Democrats, stung by their unexpected loss, and unable to break out of the failing policy sets of their own design, have decided to punish Trump and those who oppose globalism in general by playing this old Russian card which of course evokes patriotic sentiments from the Reagan era and before that, but now has a much different significance.
The patriotism of a McCain or hawk-Democrat is the total and unswerving allegiance to globalism. That is their country now. The idea that it is American patriotism is only an illusion fostered by the fact that they make these statements in America in front of the stars and stripes, but they should really make them in NYC at the UN in front of the blue and white globalist emblem.
Or just go all the way and make them at Chairman Soros’s head offices.
