Jacksonville to Savannah rarely take a direct hit because of the way the coast curves in. Someone may correct me, but the last hurricane I recall hitting Jacksonville came across from the Gulf. Same thing for the ones I remember going up through Georgia.
I’ve never been in a hurricane. Tornadoes are bad enough.
Family’s in Duval County.....Matthew took out an old fence section they were going to replace...and split a tree...They have a new fence now......I am sure concerned how this will go for them though they’re well prepared and ready with a plan to boogie if need to..and very uch on top of this storm................Shutters going up Sat. and they will see where things stand then.....looks like late Sunday or Monday before it’s there.

If we can figure out where to board the cats... and can't get copies of their current vaccination records because our vet is closed..... but if we can somehow unload the cats there, then Saturday we can venture to the airport and take a flight to somewhere in the US where we can spend a few more days.
I think the model track shifts will keep shrinking. And the only good outcome for Florida in the cone, a shift to over 30 miles to the east of the coast, is close to the right edge of the cone now, and the model trends have been going in the opposite direction.
Yup.. They just showed it again in more detail.. Whew..That would be too much.. Friends and family in Florida coming up to NJ only to have a hurricane hit here too. Go out to sea José!
I read that its track is 290 degrees which is just 15 degrees less than NW. Like I said, if Irma's eye goes directly over or north of Crooked Island that is good news for South Florida. We should know by tomorrow morning.

Good they got their daughter out of the way.....so many willing to stay behind and assist in the aftermath....hats off to all the medical personel who will hold down the fort.
OMG!!!! That is so scary, Irma vs Andrew. The damage in Florida will be massive.

also Andrew was not only small but came in from the due east..so the area of the coast that got the eyewall was very small only 15-20 miles I think...the track of Irma coming from the due south means the whole east coast will get it
If Irma goes up the east coast the concave is right there on Florida, Georgia and S. Carolina meet zone....storm surges will be intense if that happens.
A long-time family friend is begging for help right now. Her daughter and son-in-law are on St Maarten, they were there for their honeymoon. Their hotel didn’t survive the storm, but they did. Now they’re trying to get out before hurricane Jose hits on Saturday, but there are no flights to be had, and the marina was destroyed. She is willing to pay to get them out.

Georgia doesn’t have a lengthy coastline, either, which I would think reduce the overall odds of getting hit on top of being sort of fortuitously tucked away as they are.
NC gets hit frequently because it projects way out into the Atlantic, as well as the way the Gulf Stream comes up so close to shore leading to Cape Hatteras, where it veers out to sea.
All of these places have been molded and even formed by hurricanes and tropical storms. It’s not just some crazy unheard of thing attributable to climate change, it’s been happening throughout recorded history. Recent population growth and construction make it far more problematic than it would have been even 20 years ago, though.
I think of my family’s old beach place on Oak Island, NC that was wiped out, there were very few grand houses there, most were more like fishing shacks precisely because they knew what could happen, Hazel was a fairly recent memory. That was the bad one for NC. I still remember multistory retail buildings in beach towns with the high water marks from storm surge, some well into the second story.
